DEBATE AND OTHER REMINDERS

REQUIREMENTS FOR FOURTH QUARTER DEBATE PROJECT

I. Debater:

a. Give a complete speech fulfilling his/her speaker role assigned (see the Debate Handout for information on speaker roles, argumentations, and rebuttals)

b. Submit a short assessment of their researchers detailing the extent of support provided to them before or during the debate.

c. Grading system:

i. The debater’s grade will be based on his/her speech and the team’s performance in the debate

1. Speech: 70%

a. Manner – confidence, voice audibility, persuasion – 30%

b. Matter – content of speech, analysis, responsiveness – 30%

c. Method – fulfillment of speaker roles – 10%

2. Team’s Performance: 30% – to be given by the teacher, based on their over-all persuasion, analysis, and strategy of the team.

II. Researcher:

a. Submit a minimum of 2-page argumentative essay with supporting facts and research. The argumentative essay must be for the side/team that the researcher is assigned to. This will be submitted right after the debate.

b. Provide facts and other support in analysis and argumentation to the debaters of their team.

c. Grading system:

i. Argumentative essay: 70% - should include reference/s and should represent original ideas and must have a firm stance.

ii. Researcher’s support of the team: 30% – to be given by the teacher based on the assessment submitted by the debaters.

III. Adjudicator:

a. Be present in the debate, take down notes, and participate in the deliberations of the winning team.

b. Submit a written adjudication (1 page) discussing and explaining his/her choice of winning team as well as best debater choice. The written adjudication also includes comments on speakers, the debate exchange, the debate topic, and the other matters (venue, audience’s behaviour, etc)

c. Grading System:

i. Presence and participation in adjudication: 40%

ii. Written Adjudication: 60% (to be submitted 1 day after the debate)

Other matters: Post 3-4 posters (small bond paper size) around the campus to invite people to watch your debate. You may also invite other teachers (e.g., adviser). The debaters have the option to wear business attire but are not required.

FOURTH QUARTER REMINDERS:

I. SIGAW Project

a. Leaders: Submit a brief evaluation of each member of the class and their contribution to the project (not later than March 5)

b. Presenters: Please come as a group to the schedule assigned to your class to answer some questions about your tarpaulin:

Be: March 3 (Tue), 1140-1150 am

Cs: March 3 (Tue), 1150am-12nn

Li: March 2 (Mon), 1140-1150 am

Mg: March 2 (Mon), 1150am-12nn

No show, no grade.

c. Robotics participants: see me for your assigned work in lieu of the SIGAW project (that’s if you did not contribute to the class work).

II. Debate Project: Please refer to the Debate Guidelines and posted Requirements of the Debate Project for details. The debates will be held during SOCSCI period unless otherwise stated. Schedule:

Be: DEB1 –Mar 4 (Wed); DEB2 – Mar 6 (Fri)

Cs: DEB1- Mar 5 (Thu); DEB2 – Mar 12 (Thu)

Li: DEB1 – Mar 5 (Thu) 2nd period class; DEB2 – Mar 6 (Fri)

Mg: DEB1 – Mar 3 (Tue); DEB2 – Mar 4 (Wed)

III. Checklist of submissions. Make sure to complete these other 4th quarter requirements:

a. Amistad answers to guide questions – due around 2nd week of Feb

b. Portfolio Entry (Freedom) – due Feb 27

c. Bonus paper on slavery (optional)

d. Final evaluation – Clearance requirement, due March 12

IV. Coverage of exams

a. LONG TEST – 45 pts. Part of the 35% Quizzes and Long Test component. Enlightenment, Industrial Revolution, Amistad.

b. PERIODIC TEST – 60-70 pts total. 30% of grade.

Enlightenment, French and American Revolution, Industrial Revolution, World Wars, World Map. Open Notes system but absolutely NO maps, NO photocopies, NO print-outs allowed.
